Your Nerves & Control Your Life
After loosing most of my sight to eye cancer early on in my
life, I have been very conscious about the way I look and what
other people think of me. Add this to the usual nerves you get
from either top level competition or visiting a new client for
the first time and I became controlled by my nerves. Something
needed to change and I found just the thing.
Ever been in a situation where you find your heart rate going
up, you start to sweat and you just don’t want to be there? Well
that’s normal, the thing is nerves are an indication of doing
something that is important to you.
“NERVE’S ARE GOOD IF USED CORRECTLY”. When you are next in that
situation, take a look at why, step back from the moment and
relax. Stop rushing around and give yourself plenty of time to
prepare. PREPARATION is one of the keys to control. Make sure
you have left no stone unturned. I learned this lesson very
early in my Sales career when I booked a new business meeting
for my Managing Director and I at Telewest. I had been so
excited about booking a meeting at one of the biggest telecom’s
companies in the UK, that I forgot to collect information about
where to park and get the directions. Yes we were late to the
meeting and I was very embarrassed, which made my nerves even
worse.

The next rule is RELAXATION. I used to suffer from lack of sleep
the night before a competition, but I never have that problem
now. I now use a technique called visualization. Simply lay on
your bed and close your eyes. Imagine a big screen in-front of
you and your on the screen completing something that made you
feel good. With me, it involves my best throw when I won the
World Championships in 1995. Do this to some relaxing music and
you will fall into a deep sleep and be ready to close that deal
next day. |
